In 1891, a group of San Antonio women decided to pay tribute to the Texas Revolution by honoring the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto with a Battle of Flowers Parade. The Battle of Flowers Parade is the only one in the country to be planned and directed entirely by women. The Battle of Flowers was an immediate success. Within a few years, more events occurred on or near the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto, April 21—a carnival, balls, and coronations of “royalty.” The Fiesta tradition soon grew to be a multi-week celebration we know today.

The Fiesta medal tradition in San Antonio, Texas, began in 1946 when King Antonio started distributing coins to children. Initially, these were half-dollar sized coins, sometimes tied to strings to wear. By 1961, Joske’s department store introduced coin holders, and soon, people were wearing them around their necks or pinned to clothing. In 1971, the first official Fiesta medal, with coins attached to ribbons, was distributed by King Antonio XLIX, Charles Orsinger. Over time, the tradition expanded, with various organizations, businesses, and individuals creating their own unique Fiesta medals.

The 2025 TSHA Fiesta Medal celebrates the inaugural year for the Texas Revolution Rendezvous. Soon to be an official Fiesta event, this event will take place the first weekend of Fiesta every year!
